STEPS

With all of the tools that live around us, we can learn almost anything if we know where to look for it. Take, for example, Adilyn Malcolm, who taught herself how to dubstep dance by watching youtube videos. As you watch the video, ask yourself– How did Adilyn approach the learning process? What steps did she take?

Think about what you might want to learn, such as:

3

When building a new skill, it can be helpful to think about the process as much as the outcome. How might you begin the process of translating an interest into a new skill?  Below are few ways you might get started:

WATCH AND LEARN

Watch how-to videos
on YouTube

GO DEEP

Collect resources or
 read about the topic

BUILD ROUTINE

Do it for 10 minutes
every day

GET HANDS ON

Take a class or use a skillbuilding app

PARTNER UP

Enlist a s buddy and
learn together

ASK AN EXPERT

Learn from someone who knows the skill well

4

Take that first step and dive in! Reach out to your buddy or expert, start collecting resources, find a video, class, or app that you want to check out, or schedule time for your routine.

5

After trying your method out for the first time, challenge yourself to improve the skill by working on it consistently over the next month. Keep a journal to track your progress— celebrate small wins and reflect on what you could learn when things don’t go as planned. The important part is to stick with it long enough to make some progress towards your goal.

HABITS

Pace
yourself

When you’re learning a new skill or activity, moving too quickly or putting 100% of your energy into it all at once can cause you to feel burned out. Create a plan that sets a realistic pace and builds in breaks or rest days to your schedule. You will come back feeling refreshed and motivated to keep going!

Use your
resources

If you’re trying to learn a new skill, chances are you're not the first person to try learning it. Collect resources that leverage the expertise of others— online classes, articles or blog posts, how-to tutorials, apps that teach the skill— put them all in one place to serve as a starting point.

Find your community

You don’t have to do it alone! In fact, many of us learn new skills best in a social setting. Find a group of people who share a commitment to learning about something together— meet regularly and share your progress, ask questions, and offer suggestions or support.
